Andrea Finlay

Approaching design from a multi-disciplinary background, Andrea has a Bachelor's degree in Applied Design in Interior Design from Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and a Master of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art & Design.

Andrea began her career in a small design firm specializing in high-tech corporate interiors before moving to the UK where she worked on a community treatment clinic in Zimbabwe for HIV/AIDS patients. Over the past 22 years, Andrea has specialized in high-end residential and multi-unit design, working on many award-winning projects. She has received IDI and Seattle Design awards and also has experience in retail, corporate and hospitality design. In 2016, Andrea started her own firm— Her work is client-driven and informed by the architectural character and site/context of her projects.

Teaching has been an integral part of Andrea’s design practice and she has over 10 years of academic instructional time behind her. She has developed and taught courses in Design Theory, Space Planning, Design & Architectural History, Building Technology, Furniture/Millwork Design, and Graphic Presentation. Andrea’s professional and academic experience offers students a solid foundation of critical analysis, problem-solving, creative theory, and process.

Andrea also maintains an active art practice interrogating queer space and liminality within both a private and public context. Her work includes photography, printmaking, and 3D installation work and she has explored subversive community art both invited, and uninvited. Most recently, her work was included in 2021 Vancouver Biennale walk/bike routes, and the 2021 Vancouver Pride Art Walk.
