Describe a Typical Work Day:

Create/Edit Sound Effects, Compose Music, Record or act in Foley, Mixing.

What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of?

I am proud of everything I have completed (even if it makes it no further than YouTube as each project increases in quality).

I would be most proud of being a recipient of the Fred Sherratt Award where I was flown to Toronto and played a show at Much Music. Also completion of Sound Design, Music Recording/Mixing of a play called Math Out Loud which is set to do a BC tour this school year and cross Canada tour in Sept of 2013. Additionally, I’m just completing a feature film which some of the compositions have been of my best work thus far.

What are your creative inspirations or influences? Who are your heroes?

There are so many creative inspirations and I find them on a daily basis, so it would be unfair to name names. I constantly quote LaSalle College Vancouver faculty, learn from watching someones Youtube video that only has 50 hits, and follow what industry giants are doing. I am influenced everyday and often without notice.

My hero would have to be my loving wife, Kristy. The amount of dinners/time I have missed, standing in high heels in nothing but my boxers in a Foley pit to come home to “How’d everything go?” and not an empty apartment, make her a hero that fiction could not surpass.

What do you enjoy the most about your career?

The creative side of the industry is always the most challenging and brings the most enjoyment to myself. When you have a client who asks you to raise the bar and you meet those expectations letting them reach their goal(s).

How did your education at LaSalle College Vancouver help prepare you for your career?

The faculty at LaSalle College Vancouver were always challenging me as a student to produce higher quality under strict timelines. Also, with the program teaching me music recording, foley, sound effects, location audio, technical skills, how to listen and what to listen for; although those are very different all compliment each other to make you a better Audio Engineer.

What advice do you have for people beginning their careers in your profession?

Seek criticism without ego. Help each other and don’t be afraid to ask for help. And, if you don’t need caffeine to get through the lectures, your probably not spending enough time on your projects! Your profession is constantly evolving, from the technology you use to new career opportunities that didn’t exist five years ago.

What trends do you see on the horizon that will affect how you do your job or your profession at-large?

There are still many large studios doing lots of work, but from my short, yet extremely enjoyable career thus far, I see there is tons of opportunity for freelance work. I find myself networking with people in the industry without having to seek them out. Also, staying on top of new technologies that make you faster and better at what you do can and will make you noticeable.
