Describe a Typical Work Day:
On a typical work day, I usually work on mixing projects in the morning when my ears are fresh; Afternoon is for arranging and website maintaining; Most of the recording and writing sessions happen in the evening.
What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of?
- Before coming to Canada, I composed and produced a symphonic power metal album called “Invincible”. It’s reviewed as the first album of its genre ever released in China and has received positive feedbacks from overseas.
- After graduating from Ai, I started Liquid Tension Music with my friend and colleague Jiefu Wang. Our focus is producing authentic and quality Pop music with fresh sound and class. We are about to release our first album with 17 songs in November 2012.
More than 30 people including singers, musicians, songwriters and producers have involved in the making of it. We also have the honor to include a remix of our favourite AI instructor David Bernstein’s song “Walk Away” in the album.
What are your creative inspirations or influences? Who are your heroes?
I get inspired watching interviews of artists talking about their creative process. I also enjoy watching TED talks to learn from creative people working in different industries.
Currently my hero is Wanting Qu, an Ai alumna who has become number one selling female artist in China. Witnessing her success is very inspiring and motivational.
What do you enjoy the most about your career?
Through music I can bring happiness to people and transform their life. Some people have tears in their eyes listening to their finished songs that I’ve produced. Moments like that I treasure the most.
How did your education at LaSalle College Vancouver help prepare you for your career?
The variety of Ai’s curriculum has offered me technical foundation and broad perspective of many different roles in the music and audio industry. I also learned a lot from working with other students that come from different cultural background. That helps me to know how to communicate and interpret better, which is essential for a music producer.
What advice do you have for people beginning their careers in your profession?
You have to go through a volume of work to be as good as your ambitions. If you want to be truly outstanding, it will take at least 10000 hours of work. So just keep working, enjoy the process and train yourself to flinch forward to the challenges. At the same time, remember to take breaks.
Your profession is constantly evolving, from the technology you use to new career opportunities that didn’t exist five years ago. What trends do you see on the horizon that will affect how you do your job or your profession at-large?
- The affordability of pro-sumer gear, convenience of online learning and independent music distribution and is bringing more people into the music scene than ever; traditional jobs in the industry is fading. So entrepreneurship is becoming more important for music and audio professionals.
- Utilizing Facebook,Twitter and platforms MusicXray is becoming more and more relevant for music and audio professional to build working relationship, find clients and discover work opportunities.
