Primary Responsibilities: Leading a team of animators and animating.
Describe a typical work day:
I spend a good amount of time reviewing shots with my team and helping them any way I can. I also attend dailies and director review with any of the shots my team has submitted. In between all that I try to find as much time to animate.
What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of?
I just finished up leading on my first full CG feature, Hotel Transylvania. I got to work with Genndy Tartakovsky and learn more than I ever have on a single project. It also ended up being the biggest opening for a Sony animation movie ever.
What are your creative inspirations or influences? Who are your heroes?
I draw my influences from all over the place; real life, movies and any art, anything that sparks an emotional really. Danny Boyle, Wes Anderson, and Sam Mendes are just a few of my heroes.
What do you enjoy the most about your career?
I enjoy the constant challenge every day. The job never gets easy and that really makes all the hard work something to be proud of.
How did your education at LaSalle College Vancouver help prepare you for your career?
It gave me the foundation of understanding in order to get myself into the industry. I also met a lot of contacts which have helped me through my career.
What advice do you have for people beginning their careers in your profession?
Never stop challenging yourself. Be excruciatingly honest with yourself and your abilities and work on filling those gaps of knowledge.
Your profession is constantly evolving, from the technology you use to new career opportunities that didn’t exist five years ago. What trends do you see on the horizon that will affect how you do your job or your profession at-large?
Production schedules are getting more and more aggressive and teams are getting larger. Having a unique skill set that allows you to stand out in a crowd will keep you relevant.
