Company Name: Gener8

Job Title: Compositor
Primary Responsibilities: Compositing shots for 3D conversion.

Describe a Typical Work Day:

Get each of my shots to completion, work with other artists and the production team.

What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of?

Getting a chance to work on my first feature film, Twilight at CIS Vancouver (now Method Studios). Some of my other favourite moments were compositing cliff shots on Immortals at Image Engine, and recently working on 3D conversion for Prometheus and The Amazing Spider-Man at Gener8.

What are your creative inspirations or influences? Who are your heroes?

Movies like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and The Chronicles of Narnia inspired my interest in computer graphics and visual effects at a young age and inspired me to attend LaSalle College Vancouver. My heroes today are the experienced artists working at the big studios like ILM or Weta Digital, who are constantly doing ground-breaking work on new movies.

What do you enjoy the most about your career?

Being able to work on that cool new movie. It’s very rewarding to see your hard work on the big screen and your name in the credits!

How did your education at LaSalle College Vancouver help prepare you for your career?

I learned the foundation of visual effects and compositing skills I needed to create a demo reel. With that reel, I got hired from the Graduate Portfolio Show at LaSalle College Vancouver, and that first compositing job definitely gave me the professional experience I needed to jump-start my career.

What advice do you have for the people beginning their careers in your profession?

Learn quickly and work quickly, but pay attention to detail. Also, be prepared for the long hours and tight deadlines!

Your profession is constantly evolving, from the technology you use to new career opportunities that didn’t exist five years ago. What trends do you see on the horizon that will affect how you do your job or your profession at-large?

The software is constantly changing, so you have to be prepared to learn new programs. 3D has also really changed the industry. I believe artists need to learn how to work in native 3D, which is often twice as much work because you have to work with two “eyes”. On the flip side, if you’re working for a conversion company, 3D can become your friend instead of your enemy!
