Describe a typical work day:
I prepare full working set drawings, concepts, and source new innovative materials and finishes for our product library. I have one-on-one relationships with my clients and contractors and often meet with them for presentations and meetings. I have meetings with various consultants, project site visits, furniture & artwork coordination, project management, and contract documents.
What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of?
My overall growth as a designer in the last few years. I have become a much more well-rounded designer. My thought process has continued to evolve and I really see it in the end results when a project is completed. I have come a long way. I grow with every project.
What are your creative inspirations or influences? Who are your heroes?
I am most inspired by fabrics and images, I find them fascinating. I also take a lot of direction from the fashion world as it continues to grow and evolve, and is something I find utterly intriguing. Travelling to new cities and exploring has also been a major influence on my projects. I can honestly say that I find inspiration in the most random day-to-day things. I really admire Philippe Starck, he is one of the most accomplished and influential designers of his generation and he has not limited himself to just interior design. He has explored so many aspects and has made his most permanent marks on design through his bold reworkings of everyday objects.
What do you enjoy the most about your career?
I wake up everyday and enjoy going to work, I genuinely love what I do. My job allows me to be creative and to constantly push the envelop, all the while I am learning on a daily basis. I have the structure of a 9-5 job, but each day is different from the next. I’m constantly surrounded by creative minds and talent whom I admire, which is inspiring. There is so much room to grow and evolve in this industry it’s rather amazing.
How did your education at LaSalle College Vancouver help prepare you for your career?
It really taught me to think outside the box.
What advice do you have for people beginning their careers in your profession?
There are no rules, only consequences. Follow your heart, work hard, there isn’t anything you can’t do, become your dream.
Your profession is constantly evolving, from the technology you use to new career opportunities that didn’t exist five years ago. What trends do you see on the horizon that will affect how you do your job or your profession at-large?
I think technology will have a huge affect on interior design, it’s constantly growing and changing and therefore drives designers to stay once step ahead. It encourages you to develop more specialty skills and to think outside of the box, if you will. New interior design ideas bring significant improvements to our ever evolving world and society, and I feel as though future trends will have a big impact on day-to-day life. Technology is not just a trend, but a method of simplifying daily life. Philippe Starck said “The designer today should not help to produce more, he has to help produce fewer and better things. There is a beauty, an aesthetic and philosophy of the less.” I couldn’t agree more.
