Job Title: Animation Supervisor
Primary Responsibilities: Manage a team of animators on a DVD feature film.

Describe a Typical Work Day:

As the supervisor, I need to work with all the departments to facilitate the needs of the production. I must also work with my leads and animators to troubleshoot creative and technical problems. I’ll meet with the riggers and programmers to develop the character and prop rigs needed for animation. I also animate shots as time permits.

What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of?

I’ve been able to work my way up from PA to Animation Supervisor in only 5 years.

What are your creative inspirations or influences? Who are your heroes?

I’m always being inspired by the people around me. I work with some very talented people, so I don’t have to look too far for inspiration. Brad Bird is an amazing storyteller.

What do you enjoy the most about your career?

I make cartoons with great people.

How did your education at LaSalle College Vancouver help prepare you for your career?

LaSalle College Vancouver taught me the craft and gave me the knowledge base I needed to find a job in the industry. Looking back though, it was the relationships with my teachers, many of whom were in the industry, and peers that benefited me the most.

What advice do you have for people beginning their careers in your profession?

If you want to have a long career, attitude is key. If people like working with you, many more opportunities will open up.

Your profession is constantly evolving, from the technology you use to new career opportunities that didn’t exist five years ago. What trends do you see on the horizon that will affect how you do your job or your profession at-large?

As animation becomes cheaper and easier to produce, I see more and more opportunities in the future. Social media and things like Kickstarter are spawning some incredible pieces of work for very little money, and I can only see this helping the industry and my career.
